Rescuing a Street Cat: How to Find Them a Safe Forever Home

Found a Cat on the Street? How to Rehome Safely

At the Cat Collective, our hearts are always open, but currently, our physical spaces are at capacity. As a small team of dedicated rescuers and fosters, we have reached the limit of how many cats we can safely house and care for at this moment.

While we cannot take in new cats right now, we aren’t leaving you to navigate this alone.

If you’ve found a cat in need or are facing the difficult decision to rehome a pet, we are here to be your advocates and mentors. We can provide a step-by-step roadmap on how to create the perfect adoption post, screen potential adopters, and ensure the cat finds a loving, permanent, and—most importantly—safe home.

🐾 Rescue Guidance – Key Steps

Step 1:
Secure the Cat

Keep the cat safe
If possible, bring the cat indoors, even a bathroom or a bedroom should be enough temporarily. Provide food, fresh water, and a litter box. If you are currently unable to give the cat shelter, please provide the exact pin and a picture of the cat location and post on all cat rescue Facebook groups. We will provide the list of groups you can follow and post.

Step 2:
Basic Veterinary Care

Arrange a basic health check. This includes vaccinations, deworming, FIV and FeLV testing, and sterilization if possible. Sterilized cats are adopted significantly faster.

Step 3:
Take Good Photos

Take clear photos in natural light. You need:
– One clear face photo
– One full-body photo
– One short video
Good photos make a major difference in adoption success.

Step 4:
Write a Clear Adoption Post
Include:
– Approximate age
– Gender
– Personality description
– Medical status
– General location (not exact address)
– Adoption requirements
If writing isn’t your thing, that’s completely okay. Tools like ChatGPT or other AI assistants can really help you structure a good adoption post, organize the information properly, or even make it sound more engaging. You can just give the basic details and ask it to turn that into a clear, appealing post.

Once your post is ready, share it in multiple rescue groups, community groups, and pet adoption groups. And don’t be afraid to repost every few days if the group rules allow. Visibility makes a huge difference.

Step 5:
Screen Adopters Carefully

Always use:
– An adoption form
– ID verification
– a video call or a recording of the adopter’s home

Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it is okay to say no.

Step 6:
Be Consistent and Proactive

Consistency really is everything.
Sometimes you post once and nothing happens. That’s normal. Don’t let that discourage you. Most adoptions don’t happen from the first post — they happen because someone kept sharing, kept replying, kept trying.
Repost when you can. Update the photos. Share a little story about the cat. Answer messages kindly but firmly. Follow up with people.
If you stay consistent and don’t give up too quickly, the right person usually comes along.

We’ve seen it so many times. It just takes a bit of patience and steady effort.
You already care enough to look for help — and that’s a really good start. If you keep going, there’s a very strong chance this cat will find a safe, loving home.
