Tips for keeping your cat cool and healthy

Desert Living: Tips for Keeping Your Cat Cool and Healthy

Living in the UAE presents a unique set of challenges for feline guardians. While our cats may have ancestors from the desert, the extreme modern temperatures require a professional approach to hydration and environment management.

At The Cat Collective, we believe a healthy cat is an informed cat. Here is how to navigate the heat while keeping your companion in peak condition.

1. Prioritize “Internal” Hydration

Cats are notorious for having a low thirst drive. In high temperatures, waiting for them to drink from a bowl isn’t enough.

  • The Wet Food Advantage: Switch to a high-quality wet food diet to ensure they absorb moisture during meals.

  • The “Soup” Trick: Add a tablespoon of filtered water to their wet food to create a “feline broth.”

  • Flowing Water: Cats instinctively prefer running water. Invest in a filtered water fountain to encourage more frequent drinking.

2. Create Cool Zones

Even with the AC running, cats seek out surfaces that help regulate their body temperature.

  • Tile Access: Ensure your cat has access to tiled areas (like bathrooms or kitchens), which remain naturally cooler than carpets or rugs.

  • Grooming: For long-haired breeds, regular de-shedding is essential. Removing the “undercoat” allows air to circulate closer to the skin.

  • The Cooling Mat: Consider a pressure-activated cooling mat placed in their favorite lounging spot.

3. Safe Outdoor Access: The Golden Rule

If your cat’s lifestyle includes “Safe Outdoor Access,” timing is everything.

  • Peak Heat Lockdown: Between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, cats should remain strictly indoors.

  • Pavement Check: If the ground is too hot for your palm, it is too hot for their paws. Synthetic grass and sand can reach blistering temperatures in minutes.

4. Recognising Heatstroke (The Warning Signs)

Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Because cats are masters at hiding discomfort, you must watch for:

  • Rapid Panting: Cats do not pant like dogs unless they are in significant distress.

  • Dark Red Gums: Check their mouth; bright or dark red gums indicate overheating.

  • Lethargy or Stumbling: If your cat seems “drunk” or unusually weak, seek veterinary attention immediately.

The Collective Recommendation

“Prevention is the professional bridge to a long, healthy life. Don’t wait for your cat to show signs of thirst—proactively manage their environment and hydration before the heat peaks.”
